His father’s Embassies in Florence and Brussels, under advice of Alfred von Reumont, the historian. Rendered deaf, and some fifteen years incapable of sustained mental work, by typhus fever, 1871. Settled in England spring 1871.
Worked at Greek and Hebrew. Devoted life to historical criticism as applied to biblical documents, to psychology and philosophy as applied to religious experience, and to the consolidation of such studies amongst his fellow Roman Catholics.
