Excerpt from Plautinische Forschungen zur Kritik und Geschichte der Komodie Dieses Buch ist dazu bestimmt, meine Ausgabe des Plautus zu begleiten und zu stutzen. Meine Absicht war gewesen es zu diesem Zwecke geschickter zu machen als es sich nun darstellt; aber es hat seine Entwickelung selbst genommen und ich habe, um es nicht anschwellen zu lassen, gerade die Kapitel, geschriebene und ungeschriebene, die von Stil und Metrik handeln und eine Menge von Einzelheiten der Textbehandlung rechtfertigen sollten, zuruckgelegt; im Vertrauen auf die Leser, deren Urteil ich suche, die aus der Ausgabe herausholen werden was in sie hineingelegt ist und diese Abhandlungen um ihrer selbst willen hinnehmen werden. Es scheint mir an der Zeit daraus hinzuweisen, dass die Studien, die sich an Plautus als den Mittelpunkt der erhaltenen altromischen Litteratur naturgemass anschliessen, seit vielen Jahren sich in Regionen verfangen haben aus denen sie wieder hinauswachsen mussen. Wenn es mir gelungen ist einige Wege zu zeigen, die ins Freie fuhren, so erfullt dieses Buch seinen eigenen und besseren Zweck. Doch muss ich uber sein Verhaltnis zur Ausgabe noch ein Wort hinzufugen. Ich habe es vermieden, in der Ausgabe auf die Abhandlungen hinzuweisen, die doch ein Stellenregister erhalten sollten; dagegen beziehen sich die Abhandlungen vielfach auf meinen Text und seine adnotatio, wahrend doch jetzt nur der erste Band der Ausgabe erscheint. From 1868 he was a student at the University of Göttingen, and following military duty in the Franco-Prussian War, he continued his education at the University of Bonn, where he had as instructors Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener. At Bonn his fellow students included Georg Kaibel, Friedrich von Duhn, Georg Dehio and Hans Delbrück. After graduation in 1873 he toured countries of the Mediterranean extensively.
In 1881 he became an associate professor at the University of Kiel, followed by professorships at the Universities of Rostock (1883), Strasbourg (1888) and Göttingen (1889).
The couple had three children: Erika Brecht (1887–1949), the writer Ulrich Leo (de) (1890–1964) and the theologian Paul Leo (1893–1958).
