Paulsen’s two most celebrated works, the 1889 System der Ethik and the 1892 Einleitung, written in a popular style and addressed primarily to students and laymen, enjoyed immense success. Paulsen subscribes to a form of pantheism or idealist monism. His writings are inspired by a double polemic against the supernatural dualism of Christianity and the materialistic mechanism of natural science. The world is construed as an emanation of God, the All-One: matter and mind are manifestations of spirit; the laws of nature are expressions of the Divine Will. Paulsen offers a basically Kantian account of our experience and knowledge of nature. His anti-hedonistic account of morality construes the good in terms of human perfection and harmony.
Paulsen is, perhaps, better remembered today for his Immanuel Kant (1896), and for his numerous and important works on the theory of education and on the history of the German universities.
