The whole of von Rintelen’s adult life coincided with a time of intellectual, political and cultural upheaval that included spectacular advances m physics as well as the development of existential ideas and the radical questioning of traditional and humane values. He opposed philosophies that subjugated the rational to the irrational as well as those that asserted unresolvable dualisms and tensions and he developed a theory of value. meaning and personality that he used in his mature philosophy to analyse and clarify the extremely complex movements of European thought that he experienced and witnessed. He conceived of human history as the endeavour to dualize an objective sphere of value through the concretization and particularization of individual values in the life and minds of human beings. His thought was a counteraction to psychologism. Pessimism, subjectivity, atheism and finitude: he maintained that a secure spirituality could be restored by the recognition of the transcendent value system he propounded.
