Background

Fujisawa Asajiro was born in Kyoto.

Career

He worked his way into stardom from a house-boy at a dry-goods store owner's and a lawyer's family. When he was 23, he became acquainted with Otojiro Kawakami, a prominent actor of the Shimpa School (New School as against old Kabuki), and organized a troupe with him. Having started as a female impersonator, he later played the parts of young men. He trained many actors at the training institute which he had founded.
