He was acclaimed as a prodigy when he won an amateur "go " championship tournament at the age of only seven. At 13, he entered the Nihon Kiin, the highest "go" club in Japan.
Won national championship in 1949. Holding the high rank of kudan, or the ninth degree, he has had no master to study under, unlike his greatest rivals Go Seigen (of Chinese ancestry), Kitani and Hashimoto, who hold the rank of hachidan.
