Fujisawa Nangaku was born in 1842.
He studied the doctrine of Sorai Ogyii under his father Togai. At the Meiji Restoration, he worked for the recovery of the Imperial regime. After the abolition of the feudal system, he succeeded to his father's noted private school, Hakuen Shoin in Osaka. His commentaries on Mencius and other disciples of Confucius are well-known.
