He came to Tokyo in 1876 and studied Western painting under Shinkuro Kunisawa. Entered the Fine Art School of the Kobu Daigaltu (Engineering College) and studied sculpture under Vincenzo Ragusa, an Italian.
Founded a private school of sculpture in 1883 and was appointed professor at the Tokyo Fine Art School in 1900. Founded the Women's Fine Art School and became its director. He made statues of Prince Taruhito Arisugawa-nomiya, Prince Akihito Komatsu-no-miya, Munemitsu Mutsu and Naosuke Ii and other dignitaries of the Meiji Era.
