He went to Osaka in 1869 to engage in business and established the Fujita-Gumi Company. Became a purveyor to the Government and a mine operator, he made fat profits about the time when Takamori Saigo revolted in Kagoshima in 1877. Was indicted for allegedly issuing counterfeit notes in 1879 but was later exonerated of the charge. Reorganized the Fujita-Gumi into a partnership company and became its president.
