Fujiwara no Hidehira was born in 1121. He was a member of the powerful Fujiwara family in Ou, or northeast Japan. The grandson of Kiyohira.
He controled six provinces in Ou. Was appointed commander of the Imperial forces in Mutsu in 1170. When Munemori Taira requested his assistance in subduing Yori- tomo Minamoto, he did not comply. Later, when Yoshitsune, younger brother of Yori- tomo, fled from Yoritomo to Mutsu and sought his protection, Hidehira received him with respect. Yoritomo demanded that Hidehira turn over Yoshitsune but Hidehira again refused. Before he died, Hidehira ordered his son, Yasuhira to protect Yoshitsune. Yasuhira, however, was afraid of Yoritomo and caused Yoshitsune to kill himself.
