Fujiwara no Kanemichi was born in 925. He was the second son of Morosuke, Minister of the Right.
During the reign of Emperor Murakami, he was preceded by his younger brother, Kaneie, in Court ranking because of his disobedience to the Crown Prince. The brothers were bitter rivals in a struggle to capture the post of Kampaku (Adviser to the emperor) and in getting their daughters married to the Emperor. Through the influence of Yasuko, empress consort who was his daughter, Kanemichi induced Emperor En-yu to proclaim that the post of Kavipaku should oe given to an elder brother because of priority of age. He was then promoted to the post of Minister of the Right, Dajo Daijin (Prime Minister) and Kampaku (974). When he became seriously ill (977), he heard a rumor that Kaneie intended to become Kampaku and, despite ms illness, proceeded to the Court and included him to make Yoritada Fujiwara the emperor's adviser. He was called Horikawa-Dajo-Daijin.
