Fujiwara no Kiyokawa was born in 706. Fourth son of Fusasaki.
He was sent to China (Tang Dynasty) in 750 as Japan’s envoy. Received by Emperor Hsuan of China in 752, he is said to have greatly impressed the Chinese emperor with his politeness and elegant maimers. On his way back to Japan, he and Naka- maro Abe met a storm and their snip was driven to Annam. After narrowly escaping an attack by natives, he managed to return to Changan, the Chinese capital, and there served the Chinese government as a chief secretary. Although the Japanese Court requested the Tang government to send back Kiyokawa, he could not return home and died in China. This was because China at that time was in great confusion as a result of the revolt of An Lu-shan.
