Background
Fujiwara no Korekata was born in 1125. The second son of Akiyori. His mother having been the nurse of Emperor Nijo.

Career
In the civil war of the Heiji Era (1159), Korekata and Nobu-yori secretly plotted against the Taira Clan. The plot coming into light, Korekata was severely reprimanded by Mitsuyori, the elder brother of Korekata. Because of resentment against Mitsuyori, he switched to the side of the Tairas and transferred ex-Emperor Goshirakawa (who held real power) to retirement in Rokuhara in favor of Emperor N130. Although he attempted to gain power under Emperor Nijo, he was opposed by ex-Emperor Goshirakawa and was exiled to Nagato Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture). Was called back to Kyoto in 1166.
