Fujiwara no Maro was born in 695. He was the fourth son of Fuhito.
When Azumabito Ono, governor of Mutsu, conducted a military campaign against the Ezo Tribe in northeastern Japan, in 725, Maro proceeded to this part of Japan as Chief Commander of the Imperial Expeditionary Forces. He opened a highway from Mutsu to Dewa, across northeastern Japan and built a foretress at Taga (Miyagi Prefecture). Maro belonged to the Kyo branch of the Fujiwara family.
