Fujiwara no Michiie was born in 1193. The son of Yoshitsune.
Since the days of his grandfather, Kanezane, his family kept close relations with the Hojo family of the Kamakura Shogunate. After his son, Yoritsune, became Shogun in 1219, Michne assumed the important Court posts of Sessho (Regent) and Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor) wielding uncontested power in the Court. His power grew so much that the Shogunate became suspicious that he might be planning to overthrow the Hojo family's military regime. This, in turn, caused displeasure on the part of the emperor with Micnne. He lost much of his power and became a priest, assuming the Buddhist name of Gyoe. Was well-versed in Court usages and traditions. His diary is called Gyokuzui.
