He studied under Masafusa Oe, a great scholar of the time, and made investigations of history and ancient documents.
He was appointed Minister of the Imperial Household in 1083 and Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor) and became Uji-no-Choja, (Head of the Fujiwaras) in 1094. Called Gonijo-dono, he was a man of moral in- tegrity and, while he was Kampaku, he denounced the intervention in State affairs of ex-Emperor Shirakawa. His diary, titled Gonijo Kam-paku-ki, provides valuable material for study of the Court politics of the time.
He was a versatile man well versed in poetry and classics. An able calligrapher, he was also a dis- tinguished player of the biwa (guitar) and foot-baller.
