Fujiwara no Morozane was born in 1042, he was the third son of Yorimichi.

He was promoted to Minister of the Left and tutor to the Crown Prince in 1069. In 1075 he became Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor). He was appointed Dajo Daijin (Prime Minister) in 1088 and became a priest in 1101, assuming the name of Hokaku. He was called by people Kyogoku Kampaku. Well versed in ancient usages and practices. Was a waka poet and accomplished in other arts. His anthology is titled Kyogoku-Sakino-Kampaku- shii and his diary, Kyogoku-Kampaku-ki.
His daughter became the consort of Emperor Shirakawa. She gave birth to Emperor Horikawa and Morozane became Sessho (Regent).
