Fujiwara no Motokata was born in 888, he was the son of Sugane.
When Masakado Taira rose in revolt (940), the Imperial Court intended to appoint him as commander-in-chief of the punitive forces to be sent against Masakado. Moto- kata requested the Court to make the son of Tadahira Fujiwara, who was Sessho (Regent), the vice-commander. The Court rejected the request and appointed Tadabumi Fujiwara the commander-in-chief, instead of Motokata.
One of his daughters was a favorite Court lady of Emperor Murakami and Motokata was influential because of this circumstance.
