Fujiwara no Motomichi was born in 1160, he was the eldest son of Motozane.
He was favored by ex-Emperor Goshirakavva. Because he was a relative of the warrior family of Taira, he became the head of the Fujiwara family with the support of Kiyomori head of the Taira family. Was appointed Imperial Household Minister and Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor) in 1179. The following year, when Emperor Antoku, still an infant, ascended the Throne, he became Sessho (Regent). When Yoritomo Minamoto rose against the Tairas, he tried unsuccessfully to win Yoritomo's iriendship. On the contrary, at the request of Yoritomo, he was forced to resign as Sessho in 1186 in favor of his uncle, Kanezane. As the right-hand man of ex-Emperor Goshirakawa, he protected Yoshitsune, the younger brother of Yoritomo, with the secret intention of holding Yoritomo in check. This plan was not realized, however. He became a priest, assuming the name of Gyori. He was called Fukenji-dono.
