Michinaga Fujiwara was born in 836.
He was appointed Sessho (Regent) and Dajo Dai-jtn (Prime Minister) and served four emperors - Seiwa, Yozei, Koko and Uta. When Emperor Uda ascended the Throne, Mototsune was appointed Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor). The emperor also honored him with an Imperial message in which he gave Mototsune the rank of "Ako". Sukeyo Fujiwara interpreted «Ako» as being only a mere title unaccompanied by any power. Motosune, following tms interpretation, became indignant and failed to attend the Court for almost a year, causing the stagnation of State affairs. Thereupon the emperor issued a proclamation to settle the matter. This was called the Trouble of Ako. People called Mototsune, Horikawa-no-Otodo (Minister of Honkawa). By order of the emperor, he compiled Montoku Jitsurokut or Chronicle of the Reign of Emperor Montoku.
