Fujiwara no Nagate was born in 714. Second son of Fusasaki.
In 757, when Empress Koken planned to determine who should be the heir apparent, he, together with Toyonari Fujiwara, supported Prince Shioyaku but their bid was thwarted by Nakamaro Fujiwara. Later was promoted to the rank of Minister of the Left. At this time, Priest Dokyo wielded despotic power in the Court. Upon the demise of Empress regnant Shotoku, Nagate joined Momokawa Fujiwara in supporting- Emperor Konin as successor to the Throne, in opposition to Dokyo who schemed to seat himself in power.
