Fujiwara no Kaneie was born in 929. He was the third son of Morosuke.
He competed with his elder brother, Kane-michi, for power, the brothers hating each other. During the reign of Emperor En-yu, Kanemichi, falling ill, turned over his post of Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor) Yoritada Fujiwara. Yoritada daughter, Junshi, became the consort of the emperor, preceding Kaneie's daughter, Sen- shi. Kaneie, out of spite, stopped attending the Court. In the reign of Emperor Kazan, Kaneie deceived the emperor, made him abdicate and became regent. He became Prime Minister in 989.
