Fumiaki Tsuchiya was born in Gumma Prefecture, Japan.
After graduating from Takasaki Middle School, he studied waka poetry from Sachio Ito at Tokyo, while working his way through a philosophical course at Tokyo University. While yet a student he was on the editorial staff of Shinshicho magazine, then being edited by Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
Fumiaki Tsuchiya was an instructor at Hosei and Meiji universities, and principal of Kiso Middle School. He was an active leader of Araragi Society.
