Fumio Hayasaka was born in Sendai City, and in his childhood moved to Sapporo City.
Fighting with poverty, studied musical composition by himself.
Entered the Toho Theatrical Company (1939) as music director and since then composed nearly one hundred musical pieces for motion picture and received the Mainichi Motion Picture Concours Music Prize for four years successively for such motion pictures as Minsho No Teki (Public Enemy), Joyu (Actress), Yoidore Tenshi (Drunken Angel) and Norainu (Stray Dog). Also composed the music for Rashomon which received the Grand Prize of the International Motion Picture Concours at Venice (1951). Died of tuberculosis.
