Furukawa Shohachi was born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1831.
In the Ansei Era (1854-59), he participated in the trip of a small steamer from Japan to Holland by order of the Shogunate. Although his ship was wrecked off the coast oi Manila and drifted to a Luzon shore, it was repaired and finally reached Holland via the Cape of Good Hope. After returning to Japan, he iollowed Takeaki Enomoto, the Shogunate sailor, and participated in Enomoto battle witn Imperialist forces in Hakodate, Hokkaido (1868). Was appointed by the Imperial government a navy engineer in charge of construction of warships. Directed the successful salvaging of two Chinese warships, the Tingyuan and Chenyuan, sunk in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) and two Russian warships,the Waliak and Coletz,sunk in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5).
