1901 graduate Yekaterinodar Municipal College as primary school teacher. 1906 graduate Tiflis Teachers’ Training Institute.
Worked as trainee store salesman, trainee pharmacist and typesetter. From 1902 taught in Transbaykal. 1905 went to Tiflis to obtain teacher’s diploma and joined local Social-Democratic organisation.
1906 went to Yeysk on Party work and became full member of Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. Was arrested and exiled to Verkholensk Uyezd for three years, after which he settled in Novorossiysk. 1914-1917 taught at a preparatory school in village Pavloskaya, Kuban'.
From 1918 did undercover work for Bolsheviks and volunteered for service in Red Army. From 1920 ed, Novorossiysk newspaper Krasnoye Chemomor’ye. 1921 transferred to Moscow.
1923 joined Kuznitsa (Smithy) lit group. From 1932 member, editorial board, jounal Novyy mir. During World War 2 Ural correspondent for Pravda and Izvestia based in Sverdlovsk.
1945-1948 director, Gorky Literature Institute. 1900 first work published. From 1902 corresponded with Gorky.
Wrote lit portraits of numerous writers and public figures. Wrote articles on lit and language.
Communist Party member from 1920.
