Schooling at Bankura Zilla School during 1970-1973. Graduation at the University of Burdwan, West Bengal, INDIA. Post-Graduation from Visva-Bharati, Shantiniketan, West Bengal, INDIA. Ph.D. at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, INDIA.
After working at KDMIPE, ONGC, Dehradun, Dr. G.P.Karmakar worked as a Faculty Member in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad. He worked as Professor in Petroleum Engineering at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Raebareli, and at School of Petroleum Technology, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gadhinagar, India. Dr. Karmakar also worked as Director-in-Charge, School of Petroleum Technology, PDPU, Gadhinagar, India. Later on, he joined Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur as Total Chair Professor in Petroleum Engineering in the Department of Mining Engineering, and presently he has been working as a Visiting Professor in the same department at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
He is the recipient of the UNESCO Scholarship (IPG, Ploiesti, Romania) in 1981-1982; DAAD Fellowship (FSU, Jena, Germany) in 2000-2001, British Commonwealth Fellowship (Imperial College, London, UK) in 2001-2002 and DAAD Fellowship (FHL, Senftenberg, Germany) in 2006-2007.
He is actively engaged in research in the area of Enhanced Oil Recovery using Polymers, Oilfield Waste Treatment using Polymers. He has published more than 83 research papers in national/international journals/conferences.
Dr. Karmakar independently conducted a one-week special course on “Advanced Reservoir Engineering & Reservoir Management” during 9-13 November 2008 for ADCO executives at Abu Dhabi, UAE. He has independently conducted three days special course on “Reservoir Engineering for non-Reservoir Engineering Executives” during 16-18 September 2010 for RIL executives at Mumbai, India. He has also conducted many specialized courses for ONGC executives on Reservoir Engineering, Oil Mines Safety and Regulations, and Oilfield Economics.
Dr. Karmakar has made scientific visits to Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Singapore, UAE, UK, and the USA.
Dr. Karmakar is a Member, Technical Editorial Committee, SPE Reservoir Engineering & Evaluation, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), USA, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Petroleum Engineering and Technology, India, and Member, Editorial Board, Research & Development in Material Science (RDMS), Crimson Publishers, USA.
