Gabriel Karl Sandblom is a Swedish physician and gastrointestinal surgeon whose career has combined clinical surgery, medical education, and research. He has held senior positions at Södersjukhuset and Karolinska Institutet and has contributed to research on gallstone surgery, hernia surgery, surgical quality, and healthcare outcomes.
Background
Gabriel Karl Sandblom was born on September 27, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, United States, to John Philip Sandblom and Cecilia Elisabeth Sandblom. His professional career and specialist medical work subsequently developed in Sweden, where he became associated with hospitals and universities in Växjö, Motala, Uppsala, Lund, and Stockholm.
Sandblom married Inna Iosifovna Yakubovitch on December 29, 1994. They have two children, Emilia and Daniel.
Education
Sandblom received the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from Uppsala University in 1990. Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is Sweden's oldest university and has long been an important center for medical education and biomedical research.
He was appointed docent at Karolinska Institutet in 2011. Karolinska Institutet is a specialized medical university in Stockholm and is closely connected with clinical research and teaching at Swedish hospitals. His later academic work has included medical education, supervision, and research in surgery.
Sandblom began his hospital career as an intern at Växjö Hospital, Sweden, from 1990 to 1992. He then worked as a surgeon at Motala Hospital from 1993 to 2001, followed by surgical work at Uppsala University Hospital from 2002 to 2006 and at University Hospital Lund from 2006. These hospitals are major Swedish centers for clinical care, specialist training, and medical research.
His later career became centered on emergency and gastrointestinal surgery in Stockholm. He has served as a senior physician and senior lecturer in the Department of Clinical Science and Education at Södersjukhuset, Karolinska Institutet, from 2017 onward. Södersjukhuset is one of Stockholm's major acute-care hospitals, while the Karolinska department combines clinical education with research in surgery and other medical disciplines.
Sandblom's research has addressed gallstone surgery, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, hernia surgery, postoperative pain, surgical complications, and the organization and quality of surgical care. He has participated in studies using Swedish national quality registers, including GallRiks, and has contributed to work on patient-reported outcomes and measures of successful recovery after gallstone surgery.
At GallRiks, the Swedish National Register for Gallstone Surgery and ERCP, Sandblom has served in leadership and research roles, including chairing its research and development committee. The registry was established in 2005 to monitor outcomes, support quality improvement, and facilitate population-based research in gallstone surgery and ERCP. He has also worked as an acute surgeon at Södersjukhuset and has contributed to medical education concerning visceral surgery and surgical simulation.
Sandblom contributed to clinical and population-based research on gallstone surgery, ERCP, hernia surgery, postoperative pain, surgical complications, and quality of care.
He helped develop and evaluate patient-centered quality measures for gallstone surgery through work connected with the Swedish National Register for Gallstone Surgery and ERCP.
He contributed to surgical education and research on simulation, supervision, training, and the evaluation of clinical outcomes.

Views
Sandblom has expressed a patient-centered view of surgical quality. In his discussion of GallRiks, he emphasized that clinical decisions should not focus only on the next procedural step, but should also consider the patient's needs, symptoms, treatment benefit, and quality of life. He has presented national quality registers as tools for viewing outcomes across groups of patients and identifying improvements that may not be apparent in an individual clinical encounter.
Membership
Sandblom has participated in Amnesty International in Uppsala, where he served as regional chairman in 1993. He has also held leadership and research responsibilities within GallRiks, a Swedish national quality registry established to improve outcomes and support research in gallstone surgery and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
His professional participation has connected clinical surgery with registry-based quality improvement, medical education, and research on patient outcomes.

Quotes from others about the person
In discussing GallRiks, Sandblom has emphasized that quality assessment should address not only complications and readmissions but also the benefits of treatment and patients' experiences and quality of life.
