Born in Perham, Minnesota, Grunewald competed for the University of Minnesota where she was national runner-up in the 1500 meters at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Women"s Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She has been diagnosed and treated for cancer twice, first for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland in 2009, then for thyroid gland cancer in 2011. In 2011 she was the third place nationally in the mile run both indoors and outdoors.
Over 1500 m, she was fourth at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials.
She was the national champion in the 3000 meters at the 2014 United States of America Indoor Track and Field Championships. Grunewald was initially the 2014 United States of America Indoor champion, but was later disqualified an appeal from Jordan Hasay that was based on contact Grunewald had with Hasay during the finals. However, Hasay withdrew her appeal and Grunewald was reinstated as champion and awarded her world championship berth.
