He graduated from the Army Staff College in 1886.
He was commissioned a sub-lieutenant in 1879. He was a staff officer of the Osnima Brigade in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). Studied in Germany after the war and was deputy chief of the Army General Staff in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). He was raised to the rank of lieutenant general (1909). Served as chief of the War Office’s Military Affairs Bureau, chief of the 13th and 16th divisions. Retiring (1917), he traveled to Europe and the United States. Aviation- minded, he contributed much to the development of aviation in Japan. Was appointed a member of the House of Representatives (1924).
He was well known for his huge moustache which people called “propeller” moustache.
