Known by his father’s name, Vainshtein, until the age of 13. When 4 years old, became interested in mathematics. At the age of 18, chess grandmaster in the Soviet Union.
Champion in the youth category in 1981 (Dortmund, Germany). Gold medals in Malta, 1980, and Lucerne, 1982. World champion, 1985.
