Garrett P. Serviss was born on March 24, 1851, in Sharon Springs, New York, United States. He was a son of Garrett Putman Serviss and Katharine Serviss (maiden name Shelp).
Garrett P. Serviss’ life-long interest in astronomy was fueled by an older sibling who gave him a telescope as a child. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1872. It was followed by a Bachelor of Laws degree from Columbia University two years later.
Garrett P. Serviss gave up the opportunity to practice law and instead went into journalism even though he earned a law degree and passed the New York state bar afterward. He started his career of a journalist at the New York Tribune where he served as a reporter and correspondent from 1874 to 1876. The same year, he joined the staff of the Sun working as its copy editor till 1882 when he changed for contributing night editor. He held the post for ten years.
During his association with the newspaper, Serviss wrote numerous articles on astronomy which were published anonymously. After ending his association with the Sun, he continued to write material on space science for a general readership. For more than twenty-five years, publishers backed his projects, releasing such titles as ‘Curiosities of the Sky: A Popular Presentation of the Great Riddles and Mysteries of Astronomy’, ‘Round the Year with the Stars: The Chief Beauties of the Starry Heavens as Seen with the Naked Eye’, and ‘Riding through Space: The Earth's Scenic Voyage’. Although the writer created many works on his own, he also collaborated with Leon Barritt on several titles that were published in 1906.
Upon leaving the Sun in 1892, Garrett P. Serviss earned money as a popular lecturer on topics concerning astronomy. Around the turn of the century, under the sponsorship of steel magnate and humanitarian Andrew Carnegie, Serviss toured for two years delivering the Urania Lectures, a series of speeches that anticipated technologically enhanced programs offered in modern planetariums. Much of Serviss’s knowledge found its way into articles, pamphlets, and books concerning space.
In addition to writing nonfiction scientific books, Serviss concurrently wrote science fiction. During his time at the Sun, he had come into contact with Edward Page Mitchell, an editor who also spent time writing science fiction. Under the influence of Mitchell, Serviss was encouraged to devote time to the writing of science fiction.
His first story in the genre, ‘Edison’s Conquest of Mars’ was published serially in the New York Evening Journal in 1898. It was intended as a sequel to ‘War of the Worlds’, H. G. Wells’s internationally popular story of an attempted Martian invasion of the Earth.
Serviss was also the author of ‘A Columbus of Space’ and ‘The Second Deluge’, both of which were published in novel form during the author’s lifetime. The first one outlays a voyage to Venus in a nuclear-powered rocket, while the second recounts the Biblical story of the Great Flood after the Earth passes through a liquid nebula.
Garrett P. Serviss also served as the head of the department of astronomy at the Brooklyn Institute. He edited and wrote captions for a 1923 short silent movie ‘Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
