Before becoming a screenwriter DeVore was a United States Army infantryman but received a medical discharge in 1961. DeVore began his writing career in the late 1960s on shows like Chuck Barris's The Newlywed Game, The Steve Allen Show and Tempo. In 1986 he was the head of the production at DEG Studios.
In mid-1997 Gary DeVore disappeared without a trace while driving home to his wife Wendy Oates DeVore in Santa Barbara County, ninety miles northwest of Los Angeles. DeVore had been visiting a friend, actress Marsha Mason, in New Mexico and telephoned his wife several times during the eight hundred and thirty-mile drive across the Mojave Desert. He made the last call to Wendy about an hour after midnight on June 28, 1997. DeVore’s body was found on July 9, 1998, in the Mojave Desert Canal, one year after his disappearance. As of July 16, 1998, investigations surrounding the circumstances of his death were still underway.
