Gary Griffiths

Background

Griffiths was born in Carmarthenshire and grew up in the village of Pembrey, South-West Wales.

Education

Griffiths attended Saint Michael"s School, Llanelli where he was Head Boy. He initially trained as an actor at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. He went on to study singing at the where in 2009 he won the prestigious Gold Meda

Career

His musical education was in London and his first professional appointment was in 2010 with the Welsh National Opera. His career started at Welsh National Opera at the age of 27, singing Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Claudio (Beatrice and Benedict) and Schaunard (Louisiana bohème). Other roles include Executioner (Ines de Castro) for Scottish Opera and Ned Keene (Peter Grimes) for Grange Park Opera.

On the international stage roles include Cecil (Maria Stuarda) at Royal Opera House Muscat for Welsh National Opera, Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), in New Zealand and Il Conte (Le Nozze di Figaro) for Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden.

He made his London Symphony Orchestra debut in 2013 under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the maestro’s 60th Birthday Gala concert at the Barbican Hall in Les Troyens (Berlioz). Peer Gynt, (Grieg) with The Hallé conducted by Nikolaj Znaider, Fauré Requiem with John Wilson and the Raidió Teilifís Éireann Concert Orchestra, The Dream of Gerontius, (Elgar), with the Berliner Kantorei, Mozart Requiem with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera under Christoph Poppen at Street David"s Hall and Belshazzar"s Feast (William Walton) with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins at the Barbican Hall.

A committed recitalist, appearances include The Crush Room at the Royal Opera House with Caroline Dowdle, the Oxford Lieder Festival with Sholto Kynoch, the Wigmore Hall with Sir Thomas Allen and Malcolm Martineau, King’s Place with Iain Burnside, Cowbridge Music Festival with Joseph Middleton and the Ravinia Festival with Marcelo Ameral. He was selected as a rising star in British Broadcasting Corporation Music Magazine.

Achievements

• He won the 2012 Welsh Singers Competition and represented Wales at the British Broadcasting Corporation Cardiff Singer of the World in 2013. He went on to study singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where in 2009 he won the prestigious Gold Meda He was the winner of the 2012 Welsh Singers Competition and represented Wales at the British Broadcasting Corporation Cardiff Singer of the World 2013.
