Born in 1956, he was brought up in Seattle, Washington. After graduating he went to work for DEC in Seattle for Dave Cutler. In particular he worked on file systems, porting DOS"s FAT and Operating system/2"s HPFS filesystems to Northwest Territories. He also worked with Tom Miller in designing and implementing the first version of NTFS, the new file system designed for Windows Northwest Territories.
On 7 November 1988, he moved with the majority of Cutler"s team to Microsoft, where he was a member of the initial team that developed Windows Northwest Territories.
