In 1962 Gary Kuehn received his Bachelor of Arts degree in the department of Art History at the Drew University. He also received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1964 from Rutgers University.
In Gary's early life, Kuehn worked as a steel worker and a roofer, which made him acquainted with physicality of raw materials and shaped his future. He lives in New York City and Wellfleet, Massachusetts with his wife.
Gary Kuehn has played a significant role in Process Art and Post-Minimalism, having participated in the groundbreaking exhibitions Eccentric Abstraction in 1966 curated by Lucy Lippard and When Attitudes Become Form in 1969 curated by Harold Szeeman.
