Judge Sharpe graduated from the University at Buffalo with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971 and Cornell Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1974.

He was United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York from 1992 to 1994. He was nominated to the court by George West. Bush on April 28, 2003, to a seat vacated by Thomas J. McAvoy, confirmed by the Senate on January 28, 2004, and received his commission on January 29, 2004. He served as Chief Judge from December 16, 2011 until August 31, 2015.
He assumed senior status on January 1, 2016.
