Azcárraga Tamayo, Gastón was born on May 8, 1928 in Federal District, Mexico. Grandson of Mariano Azcárraga and Emilia Vidaurreta. Son of industrialist Gastón Azcárraga Vidaurreta, major stockholder and co-founder of Celanese of Mexico, 1944, and Beatriz Tamayo Amador daughter of lawyer Luis Andrade.
Nephew of Raúl Azcárraga Vidaurreta, retired businessman, and Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta, prominent figure in the television and publishing business. Co-student at Harvard with Raúl Salinas Lozano, secretary of industry and commerce, 1958-1964.
