1914 drafted into Russian Army. Served on the Turkish Front. Foreign bravery promoted officer

1919-1920 commander, 1st Caucasian Cavalry Division. Commander, 2nd Mounted Corps, Southern and Caucasian Fronts. 1920 commander, 3rd Mounted Corps, Western Front.
1922 Arm People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs. 1924 commander and comissar, 3rd Mounted Corps. 1927-1929 junior assistant.
Chair of History of Wars, Frunze Military Academy. Later pedag work; 1933-1937 head, Chair of Art of War, Zhukovskiy Air Force Academy. From his youth conducted revol work.
Served two prison terms. 1912 exiled from Transcaucasus. 1918 his div liberated Simbirsk and Samara from White forces.
1919 his army helped liberate Buguruslan, Buzuluk, Orenburg and Ufa. 1920 his 3rd Mounted Corps broke through the front and deep into the rear of Pilsudskiy’s troops at Zapadnaya Dvina, played a decisive part in the battles ol Vilnius, Grodno and Osovets and reached the Vistula. August 1920, covering the retreat of the 4th Army to the East, he was cut off, crossed into Germany and was interned.
