Gekkei was born in 1752, in Kyoto, Japan.
Began life in adverse circumstances and earned his living by writing love letters for prostitutes in the gay quarters of Kyoto.
Later studied painting under Suigetsu Onishi and Buson Yosa, but after the death of the latter learned how to sketch from Okyo Maruyama and originated his own style.
He is said to have painted a paper screen for the Imperial Palace.
His style is called Shijo-ha named after Shijodori, where he stayed in Kyoto. In contrast to the sketches of Okyo his works were somewhat abstract and detached according to art critics.
