Genbe Ikeda was a craftsman (lacquer). It is said that he was ordered by his dan lord to study lacquer technique in Edo (1670) but died before he could master the art. Later, however, his son who had the same name as his father became a disciple of Tarozaemon Seikai at Edo (1697) and after mastering the art returned home and began manufacturing Karanuri (kind of lacquer).
