Career
Tan is the first Canadian Member of Parliament of a Mandarin-speaking background elected to the House of Commons. Tan"s nomination as the Liberal Party candidate was one of several nomination controversies leading up to the 2015 election, where all three major parties promised open nominations. Tan"s opponents also accused him of signing up members who did not pay for their memberships, calling the nomination "a farce.".
