Gengendo I

Background

Gengendo I was born in Kyoto. His real name was Yasuori Matsumoto and he was commonly called Gihei.

Education

A friend of Choei Takano, noted scholar of Dutch language, Gengendo studied copper-plate print picture making under a Dutchman in Nagasaki. Although his prints were not very artistic, they were minute and delicate and therefore appealed to the masses' taste.
