Born in Korea, he was a member of the military band of the army’s Toyama School for noncommissioned officers in Tokyo. While in the band, he was trained by Ryozo Okuda, a noted tenor. After leaving military service (1934), he won prizes in singing contests held in Tokyo. Played opposite Tamaki Miura, operatic soprano of Madame Butterfly fame. He has been a star of the Fujiwara Opera Company (since 1942).
