Taki Genkan was born in 1755. He came from a family of physicians of the Chinese school of medicine.
He studied medicine under his father Rankei Taki and literature from Kinga Inoue.
Genkan became a physician to the Shogunate and was soon decorated with the title of Hogen. In 1799 he was appointed superintendent of medical affairs.
