Genkitsu Kanshitsu

Background

Genkitsu Kanshitsu was born in Hizen (Saga Prefecture). Originally named Genkitsu.

Career

Genkitsu Kanshitsu joined the priesthood at En-tsuji Temple at Kyoto and became 9th Principal of Ashikaga School (the Shdgun’s private school) and was later conferred the sacred order of the Purple Garment (sym¬bol of the highest rank among Buddhist monks) by the Emperor and appointed to the Nanzenji Temple. His services were often sought by Ieyasu Tokugawa, under whose orders he wrote many books.

Achievements

• He is credited with having built the Enkoji Temple, Kyoto and Sangakuji Temple at Hizen.
