He graduated (under the name Berestovsky) from the historical Department of history and Philology faculty of Voronezh state University (1957).
Since the late 1950s, he worked in schools and the regional archive (Simferopol city). Senior inspector of the Department of culture of the Crimean regional Executive Committee (1960-1970). Organizer of the literary-memorial Museum of A.S. Grin (Feodosia), where he worked in 1970-1974. 1st Deputy Director of the State Museum of A.M. Gorky (Gorky, 1974-1979). Director (1979-2001), Deputy Director for research (since 2001) of the state literary-memorial and natural Museum-reserve of A.S. Pushkin "Boldino" (Bolshoe Boldino village, Nizhny Novgorod region).
Honored worker of culture of the Russian Federation (1996), the winner of the national medal of A. S. Pushkin (1999), laureate of the Pushkin prize (1999).
Author of Museum concepts, Nizhny Novgorod Pushkin publications. One of the organizers of the scientific conference "Boldinskie chteniya", on the materials of which 20 scientific collections were published.
