Genon Maeda studied medicine at Kyoto, then unaer Rakushin-in Taki at Edo and finally from a Dutch physician at Nagasaki.
Genon Maeda was the first to introduce vaccination to his clan. At first people were reluctant to be vaccinated but after he had successfully vaccinated Tadayoshi Shimazu, the son of the clan lord, and other children the people followed suit. It was mainly by his counsel that foreign surgeons were allowed to practice in this country.
He was chief physician to Imperial Guards (1868) in the course of which he improved the medical system in government Hospitals. At the outbreak of the Seinan-no-Eki (1877) he conducted a hospital behind the front lines. Later served in Ministry of Education and Metropolitan Police.
