Metalworker; from early 1890’s active in Saint St. Petersburg workers’ circles. Personal acquaintance of Lenin. Directed workers’ propaganda circles.
1894 arrested and interrogated in investigation of a Narodnaya volya (People's Will) group. Foreign three years kept under overt police surveillance in Arkhangelsk Province. Afterwards moved to Saratov.
Joined Saratov "Workers' Committee,” consisting of exiled workers. 1900 helped publish mimeographed newspaper Rabochaya gazeta: 1891 went abroad and lived for a long time in England, where participated in workers’ movement. Helped organize depot of arms to be sent to Russia.
Joined newly-founded British Communist Party. 1921 returned to Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and joined All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). Held various admin posts.
Founder-member, Russian Social-Dcmocratic Workers Party. Communist Party member from 1921.
