Debut as cricketer (right-hand batsman) for Yorkshire 1962, received County Cap 1963, Captain of Yorkshire 1970-1978. Played for England 1964-1974, 1977-1982. Appointed Vice-Captain, England team to Pakistan and New Zealand 1977-1978, took over captaincy on injury of M. J. Brearley, January 1978.
Only Englishman to achieve average of 100 in English County season 1971.
Repeated this achievement in 1979. Scored 100th hundred, England v.
Australia, Headingly, Leeds August 1977. Became 18th batsman in history of game to score 100 hundreds and the first to achieve this in a Test Match.
Became top run-scorer in Tests, India 1981.
Barred from representing England in Tests for three years for taking part in unofficial tour of South Africa 1982, dismissed from Yorkshire 1983, reinstated 1984.
